Concertmaster Dale Barltrop makes his VSO solo debut

Saturday & Monday, October 23rd & 25th, 8pm, Orpheum

VSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop performs Schumann's Violin Concerto in his VSO solo debut. Robert Schumann is counted amongst the great Romantic composers, and the year 2010 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth. About the work, Barltrop says: "I'm delighted to be introducing this beautiful work to Vancouver audiences this month. It is music that is tragic, poetic, exuberant and deeply personal." This concerto was the last major work of Schumann's stormy life and career, and Barltrop goes on to say, "I believe that it holds a very special place in the violin literature; not because it's your typical concerto blockbuster, but because it is a window into the soul of a tortured artist." Renowned conductor Günther Herbig conducts.

Aerosmith @ Rogers Arena

September 16th, 2010

Aerosmith was one of the most popular hard rock bands of the '70s, setting the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next two decades with their raunchy, bluesy swagger. The Boston-based quintet found the middle ground between the menace of the Rolling Stones and the campy, sleazy flamboyance of the New York Dolls, developing a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and swinging and as hard as a diamond.

Aerosmith is the best-selling American rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, including 66.5 million albums in the United States alone. They also hold the record for the most gold and multi-platinum albums by an American group. The band has scored 21 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, nine #1 Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2005 they were ranked #57 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They bring their "Cocked, Locked and Ready To Rock" tour to Vancouver on September 16th.
